. let's begin here, a threat to the strength of the union. it's playing out moment by moment in michigan today. one of the most heavily unionized states in america. that state is on the verge of passing something called a right to work law that would make it illegal to force anyone to join a union or pay union dues if they want to take the job. you've got live pictures here in front of you from the state capitol in michigan. that's lansing. thousands of protesters, none too happy with those challenging this law. more than 600,000 michigan workers are part of a union. they belong. and if you do the math with the population, that works out to nearly 18% of the state's workforce. much higher than the national percentage as well. our alison kosik has been story all morning long and the noise level as well as the number of people seems to be growing. >> reporter: that's right. you know, as the day has progressed, you know, there's well over, i would say, 2,000 people out here. that is short, though, of the 1,000 that was expected. inside the capitol, though, there's a lot going on. for one, t

. controversial right-to-work measures will soon be the law of the land in michigan. republican governor rick snider signed the law despite wide protests at the capitol. the law will make it illegal for a union employee to pay union dues as a condition of their employment. >> let's explain that. just for half a second. then we'll go on. right to work, what does it mean? people ask me, what does it mean? it means unions can force somebody to pay them if they want to get a job in the state of michigan. >> well, what it means is, if you get a job, the union extracts money from your paycheck for the dues for union dues. >> well, yeah. >> automatically. >> automatically. >> you've got no choice. oh, you want to work here? well, you've got to pay us. >> right. >> what if i don't want to pay you? what if i don't want to support the candidates you support? what if they're the antithesis of my values? too bad. and so i've never understood this. >> governor snider says it was the unions who started the fight in the first place. by trying to add collective bargaining rights in the state's constitution.

the state of michigan. and today, thousands of union workers descended on the capital to protest a new law they believe could be an ominous signal for unions and worker paychecks everywhere. here's abc's alex perez. >> reporter: the anger boiling over. officers turning to pepper spray to control the crowd at least 10,000 deep. but it wasn't enough. michigan republican lawmakers approving landmark legislation, lifting the requirement that workers in unionized workplaces pay union dues. an army of officers have been guarding the governor's office all day. some of these demonstrators have been here since 5:00 this morning. the republican governor has signed the law. >> with a stroke of a pen, take our rights away. it's offensive. >> reporter: supporters call it right to work, but unions say it's nothing less than an effort to cut their bargaining power. less dues means less influence. the afl-cio says the average worker in right to work states earns $1,500 less than workers in states without those laws. >> these so-called right to work laws, they don't have to do with economics, they have eve

in a live report. jon: fox news alert for you now. you are looking live at the shores of lake michigan just off chicago where this historic world war ii aircraft has been recovered. it has been lying on the bottom of lake michigan for the last 65 years or so. it was recently located, and it is being brought to the surface. this from illinois. this plane was part of a check out ride for a pilot learning to land on aircraft carriers, it was his third check out flight. they used to put the aircraft carriers on lake michigan for these practice tips. he was trying to take off and the engine sputtered and died, the plane went into the water, sank about 200 feet down and was lost until today. it is going to be put on display in the chicago area, and we should also note that a very generous donor is funding this recovery work. great news out of chicago. heather: it looks like it's been preserved pretty well there too. we will never forget ceremonies set to get underway in hawaii to mark japan's surprise attack on pearl harbor 71 years ago today. the attack killed more than 2400 americans and it lau
